How to Choose Your Wedding Colour Palette (and Match Your Ceremony Vibe)

Choosing your wedding colour palette is one of the most exciting parts of planning your big day. Colours don't just dictate your flowers, bridesmaid dresses, and stationery—they set the emotional tone for your entire celebration.

As an independent celebrant, I always look at how a couple's chosen colour scheme reflects their personalities. Whether you’re dreaming of a moody autumn romance, a vibrant summer festival vibe, or a timeless neutral aesthetic, your ceremony script and atmosphere should match the visual world you’re creating.

Here is a guide on how to choose a cohesive wedding colour palette—and how to weave those tones into your ceremony details.

1. Look to Your Venue & Season First

Rather than picking colours in a vacuum, start with your surroundings.

  • The Setting: A rustic barn in Yorkshire naturally lends itself to earthy terracottas, sage greens, and warm ambers. A sleek grand manor or coastal hall might call for refined navy, blush, or classic monochrome.

  • The Season: Spring calls for soft pastels and fresh greenery; summer loves bold brights and citrus tones; autumn thrives on jewel tones and rust; winter shines with deep emerald, burgundy, and metallic accents.

2. The 60-30-10 Rule for Your Wedding Colour Palette

To keep your palette balanced without looking cluttered, try using the classic design rule:

  • 60% Primary Base: Your main dominant colour (often seen in linens, suit foundations, or large backdrop floral setups).

  • 30% Secondary Colour: A complementary shade that adds depth ( bridesmaid dresses, invitation accents, ceremony chairs).

  • 10% Accent Colour: A pop of contrast or metallic sheen (ribbons, floral highlights, hardware, or small ceremonial details).

3. Weaving Colour Into Your Ceremony

Your visual palette doesn't have to stop at the decor! Here are a few unique ways we integrate your chosen colours directly into the ceremony itself:

Handfasting Ribbon Ties

If you choose a traditional handfasting (tying the knot), we pick silk or velvet ribbons that mirror your exact colour scheme. Each ribbon can represent a different vow or family tradition while looking stunning against your attire.

Tailored Keepsakes

At Kindness & Co / Tip Your Hat, we create a bespoke printed copy of your full ceremony script bound with a hand-picked ribbon that matches your wedding colours. It becomes a beautiful physical memento of the exact words you spoke to one another.

Celebrant Styling

A celebrant shouldn't clash with your bridal party! When we plan your ceremony, I always check your palette so my attire (and signature hat!) subtly complements your theme without drawing focus away from you.
